Universal Orlando Resort was opened in 1990 (19 years after the opening of the Walt Disney World) and was initially just one theme park – Universal Studios Florida. In 1999, Universal’s second theme park, Islands of Adventure was added.
Also in 1999, Universal CityWalk opened – an area between the two theme parks with retail, dining and entertainment venues and the Universal Orlando’s first on-site hotel Portofino Bay opened in the same year.
The Wet ‘n Wild water park is located close to the Universal Orlando theme parks and was acquired by Universal in 1998.
The new spectacular water theme park – Volcano Bay opened in 2017.
